It's been a busy few days in Port Angeles, even without Simon and Katie who are on vacation in North Carolina to see the Collins side of the family. Despite their absence, or maybe because of it, it seems as if Port Angeles has come alive with interesting events. I have happened to have had a camera with me because I have been scrambling around monitoring a series of projects this week. We'll start with the work-side of things and work to the fun.....

This is a core sampling boat that is being used for taking sediment cores in the Harbor. I am overseeing the contract archaeologist. They had to put the very expensive boat in the lagoon and the lagoon does not have a boat ramp. They called a crane. Cool boat + Crazy Crane Operator = FUN!

On Wednesday the tribal canoe journey traveled to Hollywood Beach. 30 Canoes in all paddled ("Pulled" when translated from Salish) in and "parked" on the beach. When they arrived they came in with paddles up and asked permission of the Klallam "Harbor Master," who waded out and expressed greetings in Klallam as other members of the Lower Elwha Klallam sang songs from the beach. It was fun. I was able to see about three canoes come into the Harbor before I had to scramble back across the street to watch more construction.

Finally, this weekend is the big Arts in Action Festival. Its highlight is a sand sculpture contest with 10 serious artists vying for the prize. Here are a couple of the highlights of the process. They were just starting yesterday. It looks like reverse archaeology. They use the same trowels, dental picks, and shovels that I use to excavate; except they don't have to screen the excess sand to look for artifacts...
