We also saw a short but very cool fireworks display from the top of the dam. With the water rushing over the dam, 1000s of people around, and fireworks exploding both in the air and from in front of the dam it was a neat experience. There are no amatuer fireworks in Coulee Dam. After Port Angeles it was a truly wonderful experience. We lit some smoke bombs and sparklers in the back yard before we tromped down the street to the park to watch the official display. We came home at 11 to quiet. Amazingly the town fire alarm didn't even go off (despite a fire across town- the volunteers had a "work" barbecue and were already at the station hanging out at that point...).
Today we are laying low. Nine hours on the water yesterday tapped us. One of two fires in the region is burning about 18 miles northeast of us. There's not much smoke and there have been several wild land fire units, a helicopter and a bomber on it. It was fun to see the aerial assault from the water yesterday. I'm off to Montana for work for the week tomorrow. Katie is anxious and already preparing to be the new Kindergarden Teacher down the street in the new Coulee Dam Elementary School this fall. The garden looks great in the heat. We had our first tomatoes a while ago with lunch. Zucchini and beans are setting on like mad too and I think the eggplant grew at least two inches yesterday (not kidding). We'll be enjoying the air conditioner this week as temps look to hover right around 100 all week. The boys have plans to hit the beach with friends, go to a birthday party at North Dam on Friday, and spend some time at the library for the summer reading program.
Please enjoy some smoky s'more pictures of the pre-fireworks festivities on River Drive.
